A Way to check Windows Serial numbers?

At my work we have a couple serial numbers that I'm not sure have been used or not. Is there an easy way to find out without calling microsoft or going through the activation procedure?

If the computer had the OS installed by the OEM, the first five characters might be a generic number for bulk installations. For IT record keeping, the serial number should be written on a tag on the outside of the case. Not having it documented somewhere on the computer when it was installed could be grounds for sepuku in some IT departments.

We now tag our computers but these keys have been around since before I started working here.
