#1
Cut n paste from announcement at XLR8yourmac.com

" Good news/bad news - Mac ATI Video Cards

Bad news = ATI 9800 MacEdition with 256MB is history. ATI was apparently not able to attain the memory needed for that card anymore and had to cancel it.

Good News = ATI 9800 MacEdition with 128MB, which provided nearly the exact same performance in benchmarks and FPS testing as the 256MB model - has been reintroduced. We have the ATI Radeon 9800 MacEdition with 128MB of VRAM in stock today!
$245.00 for XLR8yourMac Readers
The ATI Radeon 9800 in stock is for AGP 2X/4X and compatible with any PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics (aka Sawtooth), GigE, Digital Audio, Quicksilver, or Mirrored Drive Door (MDD) model.

We didn't want to get anyone's hopes up till we physically received these cards - but ATI has come through and a large quantity has been provided and is in stock. For the first time in nearly a year we now have Radeon 9800s in stock!
2nd Day Air for $7.95 or less, UPS Ground for $2.95. Green in stock with same day out the door shipping! "

$245 is probably more than most of the machine this would fit in are worth, no?

It would be about half the going rate of my G4 933. Sad

I just sold my 533 dual for less than that. Those cards sure do sell for a lot less than that on eBay, used of course.

Mac video card pricing is horrible. I bought an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB video card for about $100 several years ago... of course, that was the PC version.

I got the PC version for $65 (new!) about a year ago via eBay "Buy It Now". Firmware conversion takes about 15 minutes total and can be done on a Mac.

I wonder how ATI would justify a price differential of 200-300%?

The PC after market hardware industry is so cutthroat I imagine the Mac arena is an easy profit. I mean you have to actually develop and market this stuff so that costs money, but you don't have a dozen competitors out there offering the same thing for less so you can pretty much name your price.

Article Acceleratror, can you show a link to how you did the firmware conversion? I may be interested in doing this if it's easy enough and can extend the life of my G4. Thanks. Smile
