I'd advise against trying to store the extension cord in the toolbox. It will coil nicely and hang on a nail/hook or on top of the toolbox. It will always be in the way inside, and is not the most used item in your kit.

Maybe not the answer to the specific question (there have been some great suggestions above), but the following has gotten me through life at home, camping, in the car and 27 years of building sets for TV and Films:

A Good Swiss Army Knife

A Maglite AA battery flashlight

An EMT belt clip pouch

These items and duct tape will get you through 90% of anything.

Bonus: Add a Leatherman tool and you're good to go!

Husky Flip Grip Pliers. They're two tools in one and very well made. I can't find a picture online but they operate something like this.

Check your local Home Depot, they should have it.

I think everyone should also have a good Leatherman multi-tool.

Write down the name and phone number of an established plumbing company in your area with emergency 24 hour service like RotoRooter and tape it to the inside of your toolbox lid.

Just in case...

I keep a wiki of every recommendation I hear for any kind of worker.
That way I'd be able to access it from anywhere if a tenant called with a crisis I couldn't immediately attend to. Or walk a friend or family memer to the page via phone if necessary.
