I am trying to setup some ATA to work with SIPphone (Gizmo Project) and I need some help. I got the ATA boxes unlocked, I got them set up with SIP phone, (i.e. proxy, account numbers, passwords) and all seems good.

Calls from Telephone to laptop seems OK (sound goes both ways) but calls form laptop top telephone are one-way-sound (I can hear sound form laptop in the telephone, ut not the other way around).

What is even worse is that calls between telephones are silent both ways.

Also, I can make test calls like 1-747-474-ECHO and I hear the announcement and then the echo just fine). ** (announcement of my own number) and *0 (announcement if I am behind a router with NAT or not) also works fine.

Can anyone help? I did post some questions in the gizmo forum, but that forum is slower than frozen honey.

What is ATA? I'm pretty good with VoIP, but there are just too many TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms).

I think it is Analog Telephone Adapter.

basically the VOIP box that connects an old telephone to the internet.

I think I figured it out: if you have multiple VOIP ATA boxes behind the same router, especially from the same provider, you might have issues like these. I just used SIPbroker to call my VOIP boxes from a landline and they work fine.

When you say you are pretty good with VOIP, what do you mean? what servers do you use?

I have packet8, and my family calls us using Softalk (form packet8), but they don't have the PC always on and thus we cannot call back. Usually we call them, 1-2 minutes on their landline or cell phone ($0.30 per minute), then they start the PC and call us back and we talk for hours. But now I have several Sunrocket VOIP boxes (these ATAs I am talking about) and I would like to set them up with SIPphone and have one box at my parents, one at my in-laws and one here so we can all call each other (amazingly, my parents and my in-laws are very good friends, so it would be a bonus if they can talk for free).

I've set up my own Asterisk server using Trixbox. I have an automated attendant configured so that calls after 8PM requires the caller to jump through a few hoops to get to us. Before 8 there are options to call 1) All Phones 2) My phones and 3) Wife's phones. There is also a conference call room configured. Users can also enter their zip code and it will retrieve the weather from the nearest airport. There are lots of tricks that it can do. It can read your email to you over the phone too. There is also a voice-to-text option that will generate an email I believe.

Oh no, nothing that fancy over here. I have packet8 and I am happy with them, especially since our relatives form Europe can call us on packt8 using Softalk (a VoIP program).

But if we call back, we have to pay. landlines are about 10-12 cents per minute, and cell phones are 25-30 cents. Since most people get rid of their landlines we found ourselves calling cell phones more and more, and at 30 cents per minute you imagine it adds up very quickly, especially if you chat for several hours every week.

Most of our relatives have broadband anyway, so I though I could ship some ATA (VoIP adapters) to them and set them up with a server (I chose sipphone in this case) and I hope to be able to make and receive calls, all for free.

I had some issues with the dialplan, and now I also figured out which codecs to use and which not, but I still learn something new every day.
