More Sad Music News: Dave Clark Five singer Smith dies at age 64
#1
Anybody who was into the Mersey Beat sound of the 60's will remember them as the group that knocked the Beatles "I Want to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the British charts with "Glad All Over." Those were exciting times for me, music-wise as we had never heard anything like that music before.

Mike Smith had a really great voice - a little like Lennon. Didn't know he was paralyzed from the waist down in an spinal cord accident in 2003

I loved the DC5. They were fun. "Glad All Over" was to a major key like a major key was to a minor key, if that makes sense. I still like "Because" and haven't got tired it it, unlike a lot of songs from that period.

Wow. They were supposed to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That will be a sad night.

Yes, sad indeed. I remember when their songs first came out and many dance halls banned the music. They were afraid that when everyone stamped together in the chorus the floor would fail!

Smith describes the accident that paralyzed him. Sad ending to a very interesting life.

I loved the music, brainless as it and I was at the time. They never did grow beyond their 60's bubblegum.

I'm outliving way too many people.

I wouldn't call it bubblegum. It was no more "brainless" than what the Beatles were doing at the time. It was 1964. It was Merseybeat!

(side note: the first British Invasion band to tour the US? DC5.)

Now, a few years later, while everyone from the British invasion is progressing a bit, you wanna throw in the Archies, the 1910 Fruitgum Company...that's bubblegum!
