I guess my 17" Cinema Pro LCD is about to die? Anyway way to apply CPR?

The power button on my 17" Cinema Pro LCD display (circa 2001) is blinking short-short-long. According to the Apple tech note ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88366) this is a backlight error. The screen is dim compared to my not-all-that-bright 22" Cinema Pro Display (circa 2002).

So is this really the end of this display? I'm not going to even attempt to have it fixed but if there is something I can do, either at no or low cost I'm game. If I have to replace this one I'll have to replace the 22" just for continuity, and I really don't want to spend $$$ on new monitors right now as my Komputer Kash is being horded for a new MBP this summer.

If there is nothing to do what do you think of

Dell 24" 2408 @ $679 vs Apple 23" @ $899

Price is NOT a factor. I'm only interested in which is the better monitor. Also a good part of the reason I went w/ Apple monitors in the past is b/c they were integrated with the computer, i.e., the power button, etc. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Is that correct?

I did a little more research and seems, yes, my top backlight is kaput. Boo hoo. I really enjoyed have a 4:3 monitor next to a 16:9. So any experience with either the Dell or Apple monitors would be appreciated?

Mine went bad about 4 years ago. after a few months of searching and using a spare CRT monitor, I found an inverter board on eBay and replaced it myself

I still have the monitor and use it constantly with my Quicksilver
