Had my first complete hard drive failure...Samsung Spinpoint 750
#1
Purchased from ZipZoomFly.com on April 4th. Installed it on April 24th.

Ran virtually silent for 1 week. Then it started making a strange noise about once every couple of hours. It completely died last night.

It will spin up. You head 2 or 3 audible clicks; then the drive stops spinning. It does not show up on the desktop or Disk Utility at all.

All info on it was backed up.

I am not going to speculate if Samsung had a bad batch. I have had drives slowly die but this one went fairly quickly for being a brand new drive.

ZipZoomFly has a 15 day warranty on the products they sell. I will have to go through Samsung for replacement.

Good you had it all backed up, but still what a pain to deal with.

Samsung's website seems to be incompatible with Firefox and Safari. Had to fire up the PC and run Internet Explorer (yuck!) to request an RMA.

I hope their replacement process is quick.

I read somewhere, Anandtech maybe, that those drives were having major problems.

In the storage array business it is not uncommon to run big machines for 3 months in a test phase because you expect to loose some drives. For personal drives, I begin to feel safe when I've used th drive for about 30 days.
