dealing with tailgaters... is this legal?
#41
Rammie- thirty years ago I could defend myself, and as I said, I grabbed the bat for personal protection, no intention of using it for anything else. alas, just a fond memory, couldn't kick anything today if I wanted to... would take too long to get the walker out of the car first. not so much legend, as no room to pull over, and stop light at the top of the hill wasn't going anywhere-- way too much aggression to get one spot in line closer to the light at the intersection, that's all I wanted to point out. sadly, it took the shoe to get point across. I'm willing to bet the guy either turned into a homicidal maniac, or has thought twice about honking and gesturing and swearing to get to a traffic light one car sooner; just as I'm willing to bet cbelt3's head in hands guy has practiced some form of behavior modification since his entanglement.

I've avoided driving for the past four months. I am going to rent a car for vacation next week. A stick. Haven't driven a stick in over a decade.

Plus I have to deal with "Priorité a droit". I think I'll just slow down at every intersection.

I also live very close to one of the biggest cluster f**ks of traffic on Earth:

[quote davester][quote kap]Someone did that to me one time and I slammed on the brake. Then immediately switched to the farthest right lane.
Now wait one gol darn minute. You "switched to the farthest right lane"?? What the heck were you doing in the passing lane with people coming up behind you (or perhaps I don't understand what you were doing)? Nobody should be blocking faster traffic in the left lane (and it is illegal in some states) unless passing a slower vehicle on the right. Unfortunately, this is not enforced much in the U.S. but it sure is in much of Europe.
In FL (the armpit of the world) a resolution to allow the arrest of people impeding traffic in the left lane did not pass a few days ago. I guess the seniors (I'm among them in age anyway) heading to the early birds in the left lane at 30 mph on a 45 limit street have enough clout to keep a reasonable law from being enforced. The fact that the proposal indicated they would have to move right if a faster vehicle approached - even if the approaching vehicle was exceeding the speed limit - was what killed the bill. I don't know why they added the "exceeding the limit" part to a bill that made complete sense unless they wanted to kill it. Shoot, if you're in the left lane and there's room to move right when a faster car approaches, JUST DO IT. Better yet, if you're just poking along - poke along in the right lane. Show a little courtesy, darn it!

I can't think of a more heinous offense than forcing a motorist to use the brake pedal. What a soft society we're becoming.

Well actually it guarantee's (or at least improves) SAFE unimpeded travel. If you try driving in England and other European countries where it is illegal both to block traffic in the passing lane and to pass on the right, the motorways/autostrada etc. as a result feel MUCH safer to drive on than chaotic american freeways where there is no order at all. These laws are designed for safety, not convenience. Convenience is simply a byproduct.

Yep. At least in Germany, depending on where you are, if you're in the left lane and you get rear ended, it's your fault.

[quote Kiva]wash your windshield...the water sprays back and they have to turn their wipers on and wash theirs...works most every time...but could definitely get them more pissed..

best to just let them go around...

This is the method I use.

Instead of tapping the brake pedal, just switch on the emergency blinkers for a flash or two.
