Hmmmm... some more info for anyone still reading this thread:
1) what4's question/comment about native predators of the roaches. We have several... there are LOTS of geckos in our area... I see them outside all the time. VERY cute... almost as cute as the Leopard Gecko. I'm tempted to keep one as a pet, if only to feed him roaches if I find any in my apartment.
2) Apparently the locals here refer to the roaches as "Palmetto bugs" ... don't see how calling it something different makes it any less nasty!
3) These buggers are flying around all outside. Yes, you heard me right, flying. I came home one day last year to discover four of them flying around in my living room. Gross! I don't think it's just a question of sanitation, I think a lot of it may be the post-K ecology of NOLA.
4) I did a little more checking, and it turns out the two chemicals I was asking about are apparently synthetic pyrethroids, which are specifically insect neurotoxins and therefore have relatively low toxicity for non-insect species. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deltamethrin Cool!
