The best way to teach a child to read is to read to the child. Spend lots of time and point at the words and sound them out and snuggle and encourage. You can do it with the Mac manual if you want to. Any book will do, but it's a one-on-one process and it requires lots of repetition. I must have read "Where's Nicky?" 400 times with a friend's daughter. She liked the sound of the book, so that's where we started.

My daughter had the Bob's books sets, the red and the blue, when she was little, she is now almost 17. I liked them. They give the child a sense of accomplishment when they can read a book on their own.
She always had lots of books that she read or were read to her and she is a very good reader now. I think almost anything that can be read to a child or that a child can read is good practice.

Taser.
Not only will they learn to properly scream "Don't Tase Me Bro!" - they'll know how to read it, write it, and say it in 7 languages.
Try it. Screw Bob.

My wife bought the Bob books a month or so for our 4 year old. He really enjoys them (the sense of accomplishment and positive feedback). We read to the kids also, but these seem to be a good way to start him reading on his own.

Yeah, I thought these books were simple and focus on parts of speech without screaming out at you. Something to learn without having them being taught. And the pattern of the wording is fun.

the bob books are fun. many homeschoolers use them to supplement and/or enhance whatever reading program they are using. buy them. and read to your child as much as possible. i read to my son every night from the time he was 3 months old until he was 12. he asked me to stop then as he wanted to spend his evening time with his own reading. mission accomplished.
