HDMI 1.2 vs. 1.3

The 3 vs. 2 hdmi inputs weighed on me a bit until I realized I was spending too much time obsessing about it, especially for a sub $300 receiver. I came to the conclusion that I only needed two at the time...Tivo HD and HD DVD (doh!) and am still just using the two. By the time I need another the price on a 3 input receiver will drop and I'll deal with it then.

BTW avsforum.com has an enormous thread on the Onkyo Tx-SR605 (almost 9,000 posts...yes, thousands)

And HDMI switchers can be had for ~$50, if needed.

True. I can only think of 2 HDMI sources I would need in the next couple years, so I should probably be good for a while with the 605... and yes I have been all over the AVS forums, at first it helps but then if you keep reading you find even more information that makes your decision harder.

Yeah, I really didn't want to go that route, especially if I am spending $400 on a new product, but as it stands I might not even need to do that at all. The TV I am planning on buying (sometime in the future) will have at least a couple more HDMi inputs, and not everything has to run through the receiver, so that should be a decent solution.

Thanks for that link. After reading the article I am very much convinced that I do not need HDMI 1.3 at all really. Even still, I don't think I will go with the Sony due to the lower quality audio amplifiers used in their designs, so the Onkyo 605 may still be my choice.

Also note that the article was written a year ago and things have changed somewhat. "Deep color" is vaporware, but having 1.3 will give you many more options for a Blu-Ray player once you decide to go that way (instead of going for potentially top-of-line with all advanced decoders) because of audio.

Agreed. I don't think that 1.3 is a bad thing, especially since it has seemed to spur a great deal of competition amongst manufacturers like Onkyo, Sony and Yamaha. Driving prices down while increasing feature sets is always good for the consumer, well, unless you bought the previous model and don't like it anymore, which is what I don't want to happen.
