ALMOST without exception, scientists and policy makers agree that hybrid vehicles are good for the planet.

Puke. They might be better for the planet than combustion engine vehicles, but you are not helping the planet by driving a hybrid vehicle.
It's in our interest to preserve the conditions that allow our species to flourish here. Maybe hybrid cars aren't much of a solution, and there are possible temporary health tradeoff involved, but it's better than driving giant trucks and SUVs as if there's no tomorrow.

Having seen millions of years and several mass extinctions, "the planet" was here before we were, and it'll be here long after we're gone. Hopefully this brief, dirty industrial age oil-and-gas thing will someday be a distant memory for our species. We often arrogantly we think we're remotely capable of "destroying the planet". But let's not get carried away. The "planet" doesn't care what we drive.

Note the weasel-words and phrases that hold that alleged health warning together: "some studies have associated with" "potential hazards, etc. When you can't prove cause and effect, the next best word is "associated".

because people typically mean, "destroying the planet, our home". we're certainly capable of making our environment inhabitable

Exactly. It's our nest we have an interest in preserving. People disagree a lot about the policies and politics and assumptions special interests and future policies and so forth, and the details can be divisive, but at the bottom is a shared interest in the same thing. But oh, those details.

Environmentalism has replaced socialism as the world's secular religion. And for some, the religious fervor is beyond reason. For others, it's a place to express generalized anti-corporate sentiments. For others, it's a place to meet groovy wooly-haired chicks and dudes to drink Chai tea with. Classical Conservationists and Activist Euro-Greens don't have the same agenda. But hell, everybody's gotta breath air. We're in the same boat. That's the irony of it all!
