"Downloads" can't be modified or deleted because it is required by Mac OS X"

I have some doubts about that. Maybe there's a Registry file somewhere to edit. (joke)

Wondering if anyone's done it already, before I try some sudo rmdir action or BatchMod.

that kind of sucks.

The original Mac OS was to a great extent engineered around what the user needed and wanted, not what the OS "required"

I think it's cool. Don't worry, be happy.

It's just a folder. Ignore it. I have a different location for my Safari/Firefox downloads so I never see the default folder.

I'd just remove it from the Dock and let it be. It's just a 4kb empty folder. Lock it if you can so it is Read only.

You can prevent anything going into it by going to the browsers and Mail and directing the downloads elsewhere.

Or... make it a really fancy icon, and it will be a useless 250k folder.

I have all downloads (true downloads) go to my desktop, but leave it be for things like pics, such as from Cheezburger, because they can litter a desktop quick. Especially if you start from the VOTE button, and not just wait until the two "top voted" ones come to the top.

Most of you are missing the point here. Folders that the OS "needs" don't belong in user folders.
