Ok, I have thought about both setups and since I really don't shoot things at a distance much, I looked at what papercup has and "settled" on this setup:
- D300 (I just LOVED the IQ on the one I sold) -- I also thought that I could get almost the same quality, IMHO, as the D700 at about 1/2 the cost.
- Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED lens -- 90% of my shots are of my family and friends close up
- Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR lens -- For the times that I want to shoot at a distance. I know the 70-200 is faster, but for how I shoot, this is plenty (and less expensive).
Total cost was about $3600 (oof!) but considering I sold my D300 / 18-200MM lens for $2200, I am basically getting the 24-70 lens for $1400 and getting a longer zoom. I will miss the versatility of the 18-200 but for most shots I take, I think that the IQ on the 24-70 will make me happy I went this route.
