New DVD Drive: Awesomeness

I got my new DVD drive from OWC today! This sucker is fast. About 4 times faster than my old one at reading DVD's. It's great.

There was a terminal mod to increase the contrast of the LightScribe image posted a few days ago on the forum.

It adds a few minutes to the overall burn time.

I have the same drive, 'chip. Love it.

I noticed that.

I don't think I'll pick up any lightscribe discs though, but I'll see. I've first gotta get some Dual-Layer DVD's for backups.

I got that same drive at MicroCenter about 6 months ago for $29.95. I also got a spool of DL - RWs and LightScribe discs too for a bargain. 25 DL-RWs for $14.99.

I think it is great.

Even the Pismo can burn at full speed on that -- MenuMeters shows it hardly using any CPU power at all
via the Finder, and about 40% via Toast. On a G3/400. I can burn to 3 different externals without a sweat on the MacBook, plus the internal. It's pretty amazing, actually, when you consider that other people get those dupe boxes. And when I've done it, it's for archiving, so all the discs are DIFFERENT.

I see DVD-RAM is at 12x.

The fastest media I've seen is maybe 5x. Is there any faster?
