The imac g4 I picked up the other day says this in the system profile
Dimm0/J22 Empty
Dimm 1/J20 256 DDR SDram PC2700U - 25330
So who knows which slot is the internal?
Because when I open the bottom plate I found a Apple 256meg small dimm. I pulled and reinstall and still says same in the profile.
So what does this mean?
Internal empty or not recognizing?
or
User upgradable slot not being recognized?

Try pulling the RAM, NOT reinstalling it and starting up.
If the iMac starts up normally then the user-upgradeable slot might be dead or the RAM out of spec.

I believe Dimm 1/J20 is the user accessible slot...so you'll have to disassemble the entire thing to see if the internal slot is actually empty or just non-functioning. You might try the Apple Hardware Test and/or another memory test first though. Good Luck!

Ok I remove the user accessible ram and found that the imac still boots.
So,
Dimm0/J22 Empty is the user accessible
Dimm 1/J20 256 DDR SDram PC2700U - 25330
This means the Apple brand chip in the user accessible slot is bad or its something with the slot itself.
I don't have the original disks so I can't do the apple hardware tests.

gg,
i might be able to burn you a hardware test disc, or upload the file - they are small.

that version of AHT for iMac is 1.2.2
Mactracker says the iMac 1.25 Ghz needs AHT 2.0.2.
