Any down-sides to IP Printing vs Appletalk?
#1
I've got a school wide network, with 10 networked laser printers... all but one are now capable of IP printing.

I'm trying to move our printing interface AWAY from AppleTalk, so that any newer wireless access points don't have to support AppleTalk.

Other than apparently needing to know the $#*@% IP number of a printer to add it in Printer Setup Utility (at least in 10.3.9), are there any drawbacks to using IP Printing as a protocol rather than AppleTalk?

That is plenty in most situations.

Sometimes certain printer features are only usable over certain protocol, but thats rare.

Isn't there less feedback with IP printing - like Jams and such?

I have used it for a couple years at home with OS X, OS 9, and occasionally with XP and IP printing works fine.
