DSL modem weirdness

So I've been having massive trouble connecting at home, and it's taken four service calls to sort it out. After getting the physical problems on the line solved, it will now connect for ~5 minutes and then time-out. Looking through the logs, I'm finding this:

mDNSResponder[24]: NOTE: Wide-Area Service Discovery disabled to avoid crashing defective DNS relay 192.168.227.1:53

So what the hell do I do to resolve that, or where do I look?

I think (I hope) I finally resolved it with a bit of searching - basically the machine was querying for the DNS server, getting some funny responses, and as a result cutting the connection to keep things safe on the computer end. Hard-entering the DNS addresses for the ISP seem to have resolved the problem. The same or very similar situation is described here and led to what thus far appears to be the solution (should anyone else be plagued with similar problems in the future...):
