2 Car Repair Questions: Muffler and Transmission
#1
Have an 89 Toyota Corolla. The Muffler at the very end (by the Tail Pipe) needs to be replaced. Can a do it yourselfer replace a muffler like that?

Have an 88 Aerostar with a Transmission that won't go forward or reverse. Quote from best shop is $1,800.00. Is there anything a do it your selfer can do with a transmission.

I am sure there are tons of trans in wrecking yards locally. Just not sure I can do the job.

That is the resonator, not the muffler, when I was poor, I just had the local cheap muffler shop replace it with a straight piece of exhaust tubing. Do not pay more than 20 bucks!

The Transmission.:
Just you asking the question, means you do not have the skills to do the replacement, never mind the repair. auto transmissions are highly complex. If you were handy with your hands, you could buy a professionally rebuilt trans and install it yourself, but you still need to be fairly skilled, and have access to a lift, a trans jack, and a good array of tools.
DO NOT under any circumstances, buy a used trans for this vehicle, all of them are junk, it is a well known problem, besides the "Bursting Into Flames" problem.

Micro-
weld on a new resonator.
Scrap the Aerostar or donate it to some worth cause- like your local high school auto repair program. Those things are gorgonzola anyway.

Alternately, try a quick fix on the tranny- Get some of that transmission "cleaner" stuff- put it in, run the tranny, drain and replace the filter, then see if it helped. I did that with an old dodge minivan, and it was right as rain for at least 2 more years. Sometimes the little ball valve gizmos just get gunked up over time. Tranny shops know this, but they ai'nt gonna tell you.

Doing DIY muffler work is a fool's errand. It is a horrendous job that is usually easily and relatively cheaply done by a muffler shop.

Forget the tranny...in fact forget the aerostar. You now have a very large paperweight. You'll be lucky to get rid of the vehicle without paying.
