WD Scorpio wins 500GB 2.5" shoot-out
#1
This report is a month old, but I haven't seen it posted here. Its a pretty rigorous test; I've always liked Barefeats but these guys go a few steps further and I was impressed by the thoroughness. I was considering the Seagate that is currently the only 500GB 7200rpm drive until I read this. Just ordered me a WD Scorpio today.

Thanks for the posting, an interesting read - even the SSD data was helpful.

Not sure why the seagate 7200 rpm drive was not functionally faster - there is some kind of technical issue in the works. Might also be why none of the other companies have released 7200 rpm drives yet.

The 5400 Seagate doesn't fare that well either.

Dell Small Business offers the OEM Western Digital Scorpio Blue 2.5" 500GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive, model no. WD5000BEVT, for $79.99 with free shipping. Coupon code "FCZZ90DNZ2BX1N" knocks the price to $71.99 ($0.14/GB). That's $13 under our mention from last month and the lowest total price we've ever seen for this model. This laptop hard drive runs at 5400 rpm features an 8MB cache and 3-year warranty. Coupon ends July 30.
