Attempted to install bluetooth - burning smell (pics inside!)
#1
I purchased a bluetooth module on ebay to install in my Dell Mini 10v.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230382663157&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_9106wt_1167

Installing the bluetooth module is pretty easy even if its hard to get to, yet something went wrong -

There are two connectors near the bottom of the screen. Left is for the speakers while right is for bluetooth. You'll notice burn marks around a tiny component just above the bluetooth connector . This must have been the burning smell i notice upon booting the machine with the module installed.

The bluetooth module itself looks fine.

How to proceed. I really have no idea if the module or the motherboard is at fault. I have no idea how I could test the bluetooth module without risking another fried motherboard. What is dell's warranty service like? the machine isn't a month old. would they replace it?

Advice?

Take the BT module out. Put the case back together and mail it to Dell. Make no mention of opening it or doing anything out of the ordinary.

I would guess the BT card is faulty, I would ask for a replacement. Definitely wouldn't try it on another machine.

can you find the pinout of this port/card on the net? where is +5V, where is ground? use a DMM to see if the card shorted (0 Ohms between +5V and GND). do this with the card out of laptop

But what is my reason for sending the notebook in?

Does the computer still work properly in all other areas? Was there a problem with using a USB Bluetooth dongle?

Could be a challenge to make it appear as if the computer hadn't been disassembled/unscrewed. Tiny scratches, little marks in the right places etc. Good luck. But a burnt board is a burnt board.

The other challenge is, it's at the BT connection and yet wasn't sold with the BT module, so , um, why would it have been activated? Just sayin' send it in but don't expect a miracle unless they have a policy of blindly swapping them out w/o investigating.

Does the machine boot OK without the BT module?

Hadn't you opened it up to upgrade the RAM too?
