Hey, OWC Larry! What's the deal with hard drives?

I'm the OP in the following thread, and it occurs to me that you might be able to shed some light on why so many big retailers are shipping hard drives inside non-padded boxes.

Thanks!

P.S. Let me add that I just bought a NewerTech Voyager Q hard drive dock from Other World Computing, and it arrived better packaged than any of these hard drives (and working perfectly). Kudos to OWC.

FYI- just got Amazon iPod in non-padded box. Rattling around. WIfe was not happy. But they work.

you really have to ask? I bet it has something to do with the desire to spend less on shipping...

There are no longer any moving parts in iPods, so it isn't a big deal for iPods...but hard drives? That is not a good idea in my opinion.

Are you kidding? Plenty iPods have hard drives. All models except the nano, shuffle, and iPod Touch.

even if they are "solid state" , a large enough blunt force trauma event could do things like break weak solder joints, disconnect loose cable connectors, etc.

One guy at work could not believe the optical drive ribbon cable connector in the Mac Minis. Very flimsy/easy to jar loose, in our opinion.
