Follow-up to blackbook freak out + new question
#1
Went to the Apple store today where they replaced the hard drive on my blackbook:

Plugged in my FW drive where a SuperDuper backup exists and started the migration process. Everything went well until the very end of the process. The progress bar turned into the blue and white candy cane thing and reported: "Transferring your network settings, less than a minute remaining." And there it's sat for the last 15 minutes. No sound coming from either the internal HD or the external, and no flickering activity light from the external. Should I force quit?

Don't touch it.

Those progress bar time-indicators are always wrong. It's a running joke.

I have had that happen---Let it go for another 15-20 minutes, and if it still is "stuck", it is likely done. just hold the power button down, and restart. It should be OK, if not, just do it again.

I bet you will see everything went OK.

Well, I waited another half hour or so -- absolutely no activity from either drive -- so I forced quit with the power button. Restarted and everything seems to be perfectly fine.

BTW, if I hadn't still been covered by Applecare I never would have considered bringing it to the Apple store for replacement, given the very reasonable price of drives these days from various vendors and the ease of replacement in this particular model. But just for giggles, here's what Apple would have charged for whatI received today had I not been covered:

250 gig HD: $154.44
Labor: $85.00

640GB drives for that are around $100 and 7200RPM, 750GB drives for $115 are shipping soon.

Just make sure they are 9.5mm tall, not 12.5mm

Um . . . this does not provide any clarification.
But I'd infer from the "transferring network settings" message that it was indeed Migration Assistant.
And the hangup sounds like just another one of Migration Assistant's many bugs.

Black is correct. Knowing there was a good chance I'd be dealing with a replacement drive, I contacted the friendly folks at SuperDuper before starting on this project. Dave Nanian advised me to connect the laptop with the replacement internal drive to the external FW drive, and use Migration Assistant to point to the SuperDuper backup on the FW drive. The replacement internal drive already had an OS on it and, upon starting up for the first time, went through the "welcome" process.
