I have MS Office X
#1
Should I upgrade to something newer? MBPro 2.4, 4 RAM

What about 2008 Home Version for $111?

I have iWork 09. Is that enuf to open incoming Word and Excel files? And create

new sometimes?

Not a heavy user. (Office that is).

TIA

I'm still using Office X. I opened a .docx file today with Text Edit, so I see no compelling reason to upgrade, but I mainly use Entourage and occasionally Word.

You can download a patch that will allow Office X to open .docx files. Check the Microsoft Office for Mac homepage.

Maybe upgrade to office 2004, but I'd never go any further than that ...

I finally deleted all traces of MS Orifice from my computer and now use NeoOffice.

Hmmm, just realized Office v.X was NOT 2004, which is what the utility was supposed to be for. I have an academic version of 2004 I'd probably sell you (CHEAP! probably just the cost of shipping if you want it).

here at the bottom of the page is the converter tool: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx?pid=&fid=EDB6CD8F-832C-4123-8982-AC0C601EA0A7#viewer

or the link to the direct download: http://download.microsoft.com/download/8...ter102.dmg

I just searched and downloaded the converter for Office X from this page:

Be sure that you do not have the "test drive" of Office 2004 installed or it will try and use that rather than Office X. Once I removed the 2004 test drive, the converter worked fine with Office X.

I tried that, it never really worked. v.X also has Leopard issues. TextEdit doesn't play so well with .docx files. It's hit and miss. Often you don't know what's missing until you compare it in Office and see.

Sometimes. It wont let you save any changes you make, you have to "Save As..." and create a copy of the file.

Things fixed since v.X:
- Can now save file names longer than 31 char
- Works better in Leopard
- Can deal with MS's .docx

I've used OpenOffice and NeoOffice. Both are bulky, slow and clunky. I got 2008 and am actually fairly impressed by it. I'm glad to have kissed OpenOffice and NeoOffice goodbye. 2008 even works well on my wife's PB.
