You are your own worst enemy sometimes. Did you open a Finder window to see what the drive contained BEFORE you opened the files? Why would you NOT open the image files with just Preview, instead of opening everything the drive contains?
When someone has as much grief as you seem to have with Macs, you should be a bit more cautious with this type of thing, especially when you cannot predict each and every consequence of your actions.
