F/U to ...Black...now my heater doesn't work

Had the furnace guy out this morning. He verified that it was the control board for the furnace that was shot. No available service part for a 25 year old furnace. He bypassed the board and the furnace is running full time but that is better than freezing. Put a carbon monoxide detector on the room with a very loud and annoying alarm. Time to shop for a new furnace. Are there any current gov't subsidies/Obama printed money for getting a new furnace?

Check with your power company for rebates. I got $75 from mine for a new water heater last summer.

Can't you turn it on and off just by cutting power, e.g. via the thermostat?

I came across a control board or three for my furnace in my research, $170-ish but they were out there-- are you sure you can't get one?

Anyways, yes, I think there is a current credit for a high efficiency furnace (93%+?) with a deadline that has been extended to 1/15/10.

Oops, that was a rebate from my local gas co. $350 for 92-93%, $450 for 94% -- what Berndog said.

Something that old you might be able to replace some components and get it working again. Pretty much a lost art today with techs only trained in replacing microprocessor boards.

Can you get into the furnace guy's network to ask about prices? Lots of HVAC contractors are not online yet though. This was one of the best forums if you have to time to search. http://hvac-talk.com/vbb/

Nope, thermostat isn't even wired up anymore. I could turn it off completely...but then the pilot light goes out and I have to relight to get it going again.

I couldn't find ANY parts for it when I went searching online. I take that back, I found a blower motor. That was it. The guys who came out were the same ones who installed it 25 years ago. I figure if anyone was going to know if there was a way to fix it, it would be him.

BTW almost every frackin' furnace repair you call will do whatever they can to strongarm you into a new furnace. Often they try to pressure you by creating a false sense of urgency with some sort of deal if you agree within a certain number of days or hours.
Is your furnace guy someone you trust?

Interesting. I will have to ask them about that. Never used these guys before in my life. I'm going to get at least 3 estimates from other places before I decide, I already told them this so when they come tomorrow they shouldn't be expecting to get me to agree to anything that day.
