That's cool. Maybe that should be my next Weber.

upon further inspection, I found a statement on the box: "Made in USA, incorporating globally sourced components and parts". Whatever this means. I would not mind if the handle or the wheels were made in China, but where is the body made?

Problem is Americans short change themselves. We have no idea how desirable that Made in USA label is around the world. The premium you can charge for that label alone would cover whatever additional cost it takes to make them locally. Nothing is more despised than a Made in China hand tool. Get a Craftsman distributorship somewhere and watch money roll in. Too bad American manufacturers don't see that.

Most Americans will buy the cheapest knockoff they can find. That is why Wal-Mart is the evil giant it is. Good products like Weber grills do cost more but there is a limit to how much more most consumers are willing to spend. So they have to make concessions to keep the price point in the affordable range.
I guarantee that many of the workers who have built Weber grills for years (including the supervisors) hate the shortcuts and cheapening, but they also know it is that or unemployment. They are just giving the consumer will pay for while maintaining a profit margin.
