Some are now saying Apple is vulnerable to a low price tablet.. I'm not sure.

Low price can mean cheap product to the buying community. The Touchpad frenzy took off when a $500 item was dropped 80% - that is seen as a great deal. There is a difference between a deal and cheap.

If a new product was put out at $99 to start with, the public perception could be far different tham the HP frenzy indicates.

I think that HP should price it at about $200-$250 or whatever their break-even price is. There's clearly a market for a decent competitor at a lower price point. Most of the reviews say it isn't an iPad but it is the best alternative out there so far...

They can get some market share, maybe resurrect the whole tablet department and breathe some life into their phones with an increased demand for apps.

Meanwhile, at Apple HQ, somebody's head is about to roll for the 1-point drop in sales that this competition represents for the iPad 2 and forthcoming iPad 3.

And somebody else gets fired for suggesting a $50 price-drop on the iPad 2.

While the touchpad is not quite dead yet ..... the whole frenzy over the $100+ price does point out that there is a big pentup demand for a quality $100 tablet, whether that price is subsidized or by reducing extraneous features or lowering margins, etc. The Kindle and Nook are both pretty cool. It has been suggested that Amazon might be positioning itself to meet that demand sometime before Christmas. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/jacketco...k=lat-pick

Actually, it doesn't.

People think they can get a iPad experience by paying much less for something akin to an iPad. That's like getting a great price on a Yugo. Oxymoron. They may be able to fool themselves. Certainly *some* will be happy, and that's fine.. But this isn't even a blip on Apple's radar.

This is exactly what would have happened to Apple if Stevie had followed the advise of forum experts who've declared on any number of occasions "______________" (fill in the blank with any Apple product) would fly off the shelves if Apple just lowered the price by $100 (or whatever) but Stevie is greedy!

So I guess they want to quit while they're "ahead"? Go out while they're on top?

Let's see what their Q2s for 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 look like.
