"Analysts and Apple fans disappointed with iPhone 4". ?!

I've seen a few web log headlines like that, along with individual posts claiming to know the same thing.

Imagine my surprise to read this.

You don't get clicks with headlines like:

"People content with incremental iPhone update"

And the press is unlikely to bash themselves with an honest headline like; "We hyped all the iPhone 5 rumors, so you can blame us for our own disappointment with a 4S release. Our bad."

le sells out of iPhone 4S for Oct 14th delivery, now quoting 1-2 weeks

Just 24 hours after opening up pre-orders for the new iPhone 4S, Apple has rolled back expected shipping times for the device from expected delivery on the Oct. 14th launch date to an estimate of 1-2 weeks.

The Apple Online Store changed its pre-order availability for all models of the iPhone 4S early Saturday. Apple had promised to begin taking advance orders for the device at 12:01 Pacific on Friday, but slight hiccups delayed sales for Apple and AT&T.

The company's other two wireless partners in the U.S., Verizon and Sprint, were able to begin pre-orders on time, though some customers reported having trouble completing orders from Apple and carriers alike.

AT&T announced later on Friday that it had received more than 200,000 pre-orders for the smartphone in just 12 hours, a record for the company.

Misplaced disappointed in my opinion. From what I can tell, the actual Apple connoisseur's take is much different. Perhaps the 4S isn't the hands down best smartphone on the market, but it sure seems like a respectable upgrade from the iPhone 4. For arguments sake, let's call the iPhone 4S an A- or A and not an A+. Still, that's far from being a horrible product.

I would argue that Apple dropped the ball with the rest of the announcement. The iPod updates were lackluster. Yes, the new form factor nano received new watch faces and an improved user interface, but that's just a software upgrade which is also available to last year's nanos. Similarly with the touch. I'm sure having the option for white is really important to some people and yes, iOS 5 is a nice update, but again, same update is available to last year's touches. Software tweaks does not equal new product. Even worse, neither the iPod shuffle nor classic received any update, not even a price decrease.

I also thought the continuation of the iPhone 3GS was curious. Besides being able to claim a free on contract phone, what makes the 3GS a good deal versus the iPhone 4 or 4S, or any other current mid to high end smartphone? AT&T only as well, so not much use to Sprint or Verizon customers. Yes, I know, a very USA centric concern, but that's my home market. I would have considered making the iPhone 4 the base model, perhaps $50 on contract.

Also worth mentioning my reservations about low end iOS devices and iOS updates. Perhaps the iOS 4/iPhone 3G/2nd gen iPod touch experience leaves me with a bitter taste, but until Apple proves otherwise, I would be very cautious to suggest a 3GS model at this point. Not without seeing the performance available after updating to iOS 5.

Get customers hooked - people who don't run the numbers and don't realize that the upfront cost is not significant over a two-year contract.

Get them in the iPhone family with a free phone. Many will be upgrading to newer iPhone when they realize that they really like iPhones.

Who are these people rushing to buy every "new" iPhone that comes out? How often can you upgrade anyway? Reminds of run on shovels every time there is snow in the forecast. How can you not have a shovel by now?
