My husband, who was VERY into photography years ago, has voiced interest in "getting back into it".
He had his own darkroom (we still have tons of old equipment in the basement) - but now wants to go digital.
He would like a camera that would allow him to use his rather extensive lens collection, and would be a "professional quality" camera.
He also has expressed interest in a good quality photo printer that will do up to 11"x 17" prints.
Recommendations from personal experience would be most appreciated.

I'm sure somebody is going to want to know what brand of lenses those are and what kind(s) of camera they fit. Not all are interchangeable. If being able to use them is a priority, try to post more info here so someone can come up with a more complete response.

Not enormous, but I'd say up to 1K.
As to the lenses, without going down and digging through boxes - I think fairly standard SLR lenses - he didn't seem to indicate that there was anything odd about them.

You are going to need to figure out what those lenses are to know what platform to buy. Unless you want a clean slate. $1k doesn't go as much as it used to in the film days.
Also would help to know what he is trying to accomplish.

do NOT be fooled into listening to the marketing hype about being able to make 20x30 prints from an inexpensive digital camera. If he genuinly wants to go that big, he needs 8 megapixels or more in MY opinion. I made custom photo enlargements in our darkroom at work that were usually 11x14, and I can tell you that 5 megapixels on a 6 ink wide format photo printer isn't anywhere near as nice when printed as 11x14. Those extra 3 megapixels make a huge difference as long as the optics are up to the job.
listen to pRON, I do.

you need to figure out if the lenses are Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Minolta, Olympus, or whatever else is out there. Then you narrow the search to that specific model. Even better, let HIM decide which camera HE wants. He is the one that was very into photography years back, not you.
