What is she going to be shooting?

If she is someone apt to catch the bug the D90 would be a better choice because it has the pin motor for older lenses to autofocus. The only downside is the movie mode is 720p and uses a lousy codec and overheats after 5 minutes.

Cameras such as the D3100, d5100 have no pin motor so AF only with the new lenses with built in motors.

Craigslist tends have those pretty often, typically still in the box and used little. Make 'em a cash offer.

She just likes taking pictures with our Nikon D40. She is off in college now and asked for a DLSR.

You should get yourself something new and send her away with the D40. Get one of those all in one jobbers like an 18-200mm Quantaray/sigma or Tamron.

Looks like the Tamron has a rebate

I was in Fry's today and surprised to see the D3000 still around. I should have written the price down. I *think* it was $300 with 18-55 VR lens. I think $400 is the typical going rate for that older kit.

That seems like a pretty good price.

No Frys around here though... Didn't see it online.

Don't hold me to this, but I believe the D3000 was a serious step down from the 3100. Not just a model update...it wasn't even in the same league.

I've owned neither, but I think it depends on your perspective of what makes a camera nicer than another. I'd argue that for intrinsic picture-taking ability the D3000 is just as good, as would be the D40/D60 that came before.

As you look at the differences here you'll see most of the "performance" upgrades are feature upgrades instead, if you get my drift.

dpreview does mention higher ISO performance, which will come in handy with the slow lenses it will likely be paired with ... but also describes the two main "upgrades" as being live view and the ability to shoot videos---neither of which will really help take better pictures.
