anybody own chickens?

I'm not interested in chickens myself (although I find them delicious). I was just curious who on the forum might be raising chickens in town. It seems to be the new thing people are doing. Even my local ace hardware sells chicken coups.

I buy organic eggs at the grocery store. They are huge brown eggs with great big yolks. A previous co-worker had chickens at her house and would bring me eggs on occasion but they were little tiny things with really thick hard shells. Tasted fine but very different looking. Anybody know why?

Different breeds of chicken for a start. How they are fed also influences the size of the egg and shell thickness.

I live in N Seattle, and there are at least 2 goats, 6 geese, and about 8 chickens within a block of me. That's just what I can see in the yards!

My GF raised chickens in her back yard in N Tacoma. Its pretty easy.

I am just wondering if you named any of those goats or ever sent them flowers ?

We have plenty at work. As soon as a something goes wrong with a project, you hear them screaming "not me!" and pointing fingers at someone else.

I have in the past.
Most egg laying chickens have brown, white or a greenish/bluish normal sized eggs.
Bantams have much smaller and can sometimes be a little more colorful egg shells.

My brother has quite a few (town ordinance allows for four or six) and sells the eggs. With the price of feed he usually doesn't make a profit. ( you have to be careful what you give away)

Pics of free range chickens in gardens and even "suggesting" that they are good for eating bugs always crack me up. Chickens can wipe out all your fancy veggies in an afternoon. They'll eat anything. Anything.

You don't need or even want a rooster, unless you want baby chicks.

Viable eggs will have a little red splotch which a lot of people don't like.

we have 3 in our backyard in San Francisco. They each lay about 5 eggs a week, a bit less in the winter. On the whole, they are lots of fun. Good for fertilizer too.
