[auto] Rim stuck on hub day after shop rotated tires
#21
My solution to this problem has never failed: loosen all the lug nuts by about three turns, lower the car onto the tire, and rock it fore and aft a few times once the jack is not bearing any weight at all. The tire usually pops loose before the full weight of the vehicle is on it.

I would not do this with just one lug nut attached. Has the potential to put a lot of unnecessary stress and point loading on the nut threads.

Sounds like a great plan tenders.
I would also be concerned about only one nut holding the rim in the previous suggestion.

Before posting here and before calling Costco, I tried something pretty similar to what Tenders suggests and it wasn't successful. I ended up going and getting some jack stands, which I did not have but are good to have around, and after getting the rear up higher than I had had it before and opening the garage door so I had more room to maneuver myself, I was able to get a much harder swing and knocked them both loose. This was also after liberal use of penetrating oil.

I think there's a decent change that the guy is just lying. If they had indeed not removed the tire, I think the manager would be pissed so the shop guys would have to save face. I usually feel Costco is a pretty reliable place to deal with so my suspicion radar is not on high alert, however.

No Les Schwab 'round these parts.

I am not a fan of department-store shops. I prefer dedicated tire shops, or local mechanics.

my suggestion will work (one lug nut left on). Leaving all the nuts on (unless they are very loose) will not be enough wiggle room for the wheel to loosen.

The lug nuts do not have to be very loose, just a little loose. I think lug nut threads are 12 tpi so three turns loose is about a quarter of an inch of slack, maybe a little more would be OK. Once the wheel moves a little, the rust is broken and it will slide right off the lugs when the car is jacked back up.

Every car owner should have a hydraulic jack, a pair of jackstands, and some plywood to put underneath them when on asphalt or dirt.

"I think there's a decent change that the guy is just lying."

I guarantee you he was lying. The tire was stuck and he didn't want to fool with it. Then he lied about it. He didn't anticipate you would find him out so soon. A tire wouldn't get re-stuck in one day, and especially if it needed penetrating oil.
