Well, it's kind of good to just post all kinds of information here! Anyway, maybe this will help someone else - it pays to do a simple check yourself before taking to shop.

Good for you it wasn't as bad as you thought!

I was pretty sure my car needed a new water pump when I looked under the hood and could see the coolant leaking out from around it. I suppose it could have been just the gasket, but a replacement pump was only $40 in parts, and why not put on a new one if you're already in there? That was my logic at least.
