Ukrainian armed columns move towards eastern unrest. They have to keep their eyes on the squirrel. I surmise Putin supports these eastern pro-russian groups as a way to keep Ukraine destabilized and unable to rally against his seizure of Crimea. Everyone can worry about the rest of the country and adjust to the new normal of a Russian Crimea. I don't think he will invade, although the possibility remains (again, destabilization). If he does invade, he won't stay, just some muscle flexing and then withdrawal from the mess.

I think the race is between the US and European countries destabilizing Putin's power through the sanctions, vs Putin invading Ukraine and taking everything up to the Dnieper River. Or possibly Putin is doing some slight of hand with all the building takeovers, just to keep the Ukraine government off balance, as you say. If the western alliance and Putin want to replay 1914, this is their chance. The west could admit Ukraine into Nato and move Nato forces into Ukraine, gradually moving them east. The US could continue its naval buildup. Somebody will get to write quite a novel about it in 2035.

Yep. And in 1945, 'ol Blood & Guts was right as hell. We should have turned around and gone to Moscow and dealt with Stalin after Hitler died / went to Brazil. The world would have been a whole lot better off.
