Need recomendations for "legacy" DSL modem/wireless router
#1
The current 2Wire modem/router looks like it is about ready to go.

Any recommendations for Mac friendly standard DSL (not aDSL1, I'm stuck in the slow lane) modem/router? If I remember, Buffalo brand used to be compatible with the Mac?

Thanks for any advise, am intermittently online currently.

It's probably better to get a DSL modem and, if you need it, a router separately.

Either way, Craigslist usually has a bunch listed, even out here in the stix.

P.S.: I don't think Buffalo ever made combo modem/routers. You will probably be limited to 2Wire if you want a combo.

Jeez, I think I just threw out a DSL modem I ended up never using.

I'll check when I get home tonight to see if I still have it - if I do, it's yours.

Why do you think your 2Wire Gateway is about ready to go? Do you have AT&T DSL if so and I remember correctly the 2Wire Gateway and a particular standalone modem that I can't recall were/are the only hardware compatible with their DSL.

I'm using an old Westell modem/wireless router combo - works fine on AT&T DSL.

It was cheap off ebay.

I do have ATT (barely, it's so slow...) and the 2Wire they sold me. The modem tries hooking up, DSL light goes green and the nothing with power light flashing red. It sometime clicks when the lights switch. (edit) And, of course, it sometimes works for hours without problem. Intermittent problems suck...

The lineman who came out and checked said that red power light is always a red flag for a bad modem. And, modems are not supposed to click. He said sometimes the power transformer can go bad too. He also said that when they first started installing DSL, everyone was quite surprised at how many modems go bad.

Thanks for the offer, N-OS X-tasy! I might take you up, let me know if I can paypal you some dollars.

Thanks all!

Yup. I'm surprised there is anything that can click in a modern modem.

My 2Wire Gateway also clicks when it boots up or if you reset it and it has been that way since day 1. These Gateway's have a reputation of the power supply (power brick) failing, mine did, I needed a new one quickly so I bought a universal one from Radio Shack, but you can get a replacement from AT&T for less. Also from what I can gather from researching it on the internet they are quite flakey, mine frequently drops it's internet connection but other times will stay connected without issue. Apparently with Uverse AT&T now uses a newer version that's made by Pace (the company bought out 2Wire or something) and they're not any more reliable than the older 2Wire Gateways.

Thanks all. $100+tax = Netgear 7550 at the AT&T store, fixed the problem.

Looked at the 2wire reviews, almost a broken record of broken modems. Boo, hiss!

Sorry, wr, I did discard that modem recently.

That's funny - I texted "boo hiss" three different times today!
