FWIW, rugs are oriental. People are Asain. That's just basic respect.
space-time, if there is anything positive to take away from this thread is this ^^^ It has been brought up multiple times here when the word "orientals" is used. But I guess some people just don't care.
What's wrong with 'orientals'? Doesn't it just mean originating from the orient?
Colli Orientali del Friuli
I drank my fair share of wine from this region of Italy when I was stationed at Aviano.

FWIW, this is the first time I've seen this pointed out in the forum. I was trying to describe people with mongoloid traits, but did not want to say "mongoloid" as that's a derogatory term at least in colloquial use (may be technically/anthropologically correct though?). I didn't feel the term Asian would be correct either since there are caucasoid and some negroid groups in Asia.

That's true when used to describe someone with Down's syndrome, but I believe is still acceptable when used in an anthropological context.
I don't recall "oriental" being called out here prior to this thread, but I've been aware for a very long time that it's use to describe race was inappropriate.
It's been argued either hear or at dealchat that words are only words and have no power except what we ascribe to them and they insult us only if we choose to be "thin-skinned".
That's possibly true in concept but nearly impossible in practice.

All of the people who refer to Asians as orientals will be dead soon.

Not people. No need to try and rationalize it.

It's cool. I wasn't accusing anyone of anything. I'm Asian, I guess it's on my radar more acutely.
It also still amazes me how the words "midget" and "retard" is in this day and age STILL ok with some people to describe others. When used, these people don't mean it in a derogatory way. Just out of ignorance, habit, indifference, self-centeredness, etc... But that's another topic, but not really.

There's nothing wrong with oriental. It means just that, from the orient or from the East. It's a term like negroes that has fallen out of use with some because in some circles a long, long, long time ago, it became a derogatory word. For extremely insecure people like the PC and the PC police who have no lives and need to fll their lonely existence with some false sense of importance and value.

I would have never guessed, not in a 1000 years, that some people consider oriental to be an offensive word.
What is next, when is westerner scheduled to become offensive word?

So, your point is that you don't know it's offensive?
Well, replace "oriental" with any other racial term. "Wellll, I've never thought calling a boy a Nigra was racist."... is that a compelling argument for using the term?
You sound like Gramma. "Those nig...pickanin...Afra...blackies... oh, you know, THOSE people. Whatever THEY want to be called now."
As a majority, I sort of have to ask minorities what they'd like to be called. And I'm often surprised. Got a black student who thinks "African-American" is idiotic if the person's not from Africa. And asian students who quietly fume at "Oriental".
