iMac dead as a doornail...
#1
Or a brad, or finishing nail, or any nail for that matter.

I got my "good deal" UPS from B&H from an earlier deal post. So I shut down my mid-2010 i7 27" iMac, unplugged it from the wall, and plugged it into the UPS. Then I pressed the power button and...

...nothing.

I mean absolutely nothing. No sound, no light, no fury.

I tried leaving it unplugged all night, reset the SMC, reset it again, and again, and again...always nothing.

I am about to order a new power supply from iFixit since this is still a nice, viable family machine, but wondered if y'all had any other ideas/suggestions?

Tried plugging back into the wall socket?

Or even a different wall socket? Maybe as simple as a tripped breaker?

Yeah. Tried different cords, different outlets. Still nada.

Pull the pram battery, let it sit, then plug it back in? Blow out dust in case it's causing a short? Longshots, but still...

I have had it open in the last year to add an SSD. I blew out all the dirt then.

I was surprised that none of my Google searches talked about the PRAM battery, because that was the first thinkg I thought of, having had to replace on in an ancient Mac (my PM 7600, I think). Are the newer batteries ever a problem?

Replacing it would be a major pain, as it requires removing the MB. And iFixit doesn't even have it listed as a replacement part.

As I recall, most of the Intel Mac's use a standard "coin" cell type of battery. So you should be able to find a replacement based on the battery model number markings. iFixit may not have listed it as it rarely needs replacing.

The CR2032 was the one most common. I don't know after 2009 though.
Can you pull the Ram and reseat it? Check Amazon for the battery.

Silly question: Did you confirm that it was plugged in properly at both ends?
