Affinity Photo 1.5 thoughts as Photoshop alternative

Interesting that this thread showed up. I got an email from Izzy Video about doing pics in Affinity Photo 1.5. I've done some research on it and it seems to be a decent editor, getting better with each version. However, it still does not seem to quite stack up to Adobe's products - but coming closer! I am intrigued and might take the plunge soon to see if it does anything for me.

If these programs keep getting better, it might at least force Adobe to reconsider their plans to force everyone to get subscriptions.

Only important if you need it.

And CMYK is outdated, no one should be doing that anymore.

jdc, can you explain further? We still regularly get specs for ad submission and trade show banners and graphics that require submission in CMYK. I realize RGB can be converted, is that what you are referring to?

thanks all for the feedback.

my needs are basic: correct white balance, some color correct, minor tweaks such as cleaning up skin and removal of objects (phone lines, etc).

i remain interested in affinity photo 1.5.

i also liked the beginner "how-to" vids on vimeo.

$50/affinity photo = 5 months of the adobe foto lightroom/photoshop subscription so is cheaper in the long run.

i wonder if the affinity photo saved format can be opened by adobe products if i ever needed to share my workflow with an adobe user.

anyone have any thoughts?

Maybe I should calrify, and say no one should be converting images in PS to CMYK

Assuming that like the rest of the world, you submit files via PDF -- the process (the algorithim?) used to make RGB photos to CMYK in Photoshop is the same as every other Adobe application.

So:
Photoshop file >> RGB to CMYK >> Save -- then place the file in ID or AI to make your PDF

is the same as

ID/Ai filled with RGB images >> export to CMYK PDF >> where ID/Ai handles the RGB to CMYK conversion

I design 11 "luxury home" magazines across the country with hundreds of photos -- if I saved them as CMYK tiffs i would need TBs and TBs of storage. But as RGB high quality Jpgs its fraction of the space. And we print with 400 DPI line screens -- never an isseu..

The native Affinity Photo .afphoto format cannot be opened by Photoshop CC.

But Affinity does open and export to PSD, so there's that. I'm not sure if you lose any Affinity features when you export to PSD, but all the basics certainly come across.
