I had this one, nice while it lasted (it had NiCd, I think they make now a lithium ion version)
https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-Decker-FH...24?ie=UTF8&qid=1486177008&sr=8-24&keywords=cordless+vacuum Here are 2 other models with LiIon batteries, OK, but I liked the first one better (except for the cell chemistry) https://www.amazon.com/Decker-BDH2000PL-...10?ie=UTF8&qid=1486176968&sr=8-10&keywords=cordless+vacuum https://www.amazon.com/BLACK-DECKER-CHV1..._4?ie=UTF8&qid=1486176968&sr=8-4&keywords=cordless+vacuum However, I think the first one is most flexible, and next time I need one, will get that in Li-Ion version.

NiCd lasted about 15-20 min when it was new and probably only 5-8 min when it got old. I took several good hours to charge, I could never tell when it was fully charged as there was no indicator.
The LiIon last about the same I guess, I rarely run it empty. It keep running at constant speed, unlike the NiCd which slowed down. But when NiCd dies, it dies with very little earning. Still take 3-4 hours to charge.

Kap,
Based on your usage, a cordless hand vac is definitely the way to go. I can vouch for it because I use mine for the same jobs, minus the pets. I've got a 17 month old instead. We have the vacuum portion of the Hoover Cordless 2 in 1 and it's great. Has ample power for the job and solid accessories. Since we already had a stick vac (Hoover Linx which is great), we went for the hand vac part only. The Sweet Home did a run up of stick vacs, which typically can double as a hand vac. A good lithium ion hand vac is going to cost you between $50 and $75, even more. Based on that price, look at the Anker Stick vacuum. You'll get a very good handheld along with a stick vacuum which is very handy for quick work around the house. We use our Panasonic canister vac less often than the Hoover Linx stick, which is used less often than our Hoover 2 in 1 hand vacuum. Here is the Anker: We got in on a deal for th eHoover 2 in 1 vacuum only but it came with bunch of excellent tools. That deal is long gone. If you still want just a hand vac, still look at a cordless one. The Black and Decker they recommend seems almost like a cross between a cordless hand vac and carry around canister vac. Very cool. I found a Metro Vac'N Go at Walmart for my RV. All metal construction, built in the USA and pretty powerful little unit.

sometimes a sweater brush works better on some car fabrics than a vacuum for pet hairs.
