Good place to buy NAS drives?
#1
Can anyone suggest a good place for NAS drives? I've looked at the prices from Amazon, Newegg, etc. the biggies but wondered if there were any other suggestions. Plan to use them in RAID 1 setup and probably two or three 3tb+ drives, so not big quantities. Would consider refurb if checked and tested. Thanks.

jdc,

There are drives that are designed for use in NAS boxes, i.e. Western Digital Red drives.

I suppose if you are a heavy user, sure.

Wherever is cheapest is the answer, right? Its the same drive no matter where you buy it from.

The big cloud places just buy whatever's cheapest, and then replace as necessary. They've found that's the most economical. But that doesn't take into account hassle, etc.--they have a staff and procedures in place to deal with those issues.

The retail prices are similar. As I wrote, I'd consider a refurb or used tested unit, so I guess I am also looking for a reputable source (aside from the oem) which sells drives and stands behind them with testing.

I would never buy a refurb unless it was less than half price and wasnt being used for anything critical.

All drives fail, not if, but when. Cant trust a drive thats already used up its one life =)

Absolutely agree. And I've had my share of new drives which were morbid out of the box or very shortly thereafter. So I'm looking for a seller who stands behind their wares with testing and careful selection. I have a lead (from TRW swap meet) for a local vendor who sells hard drives pulled from equipment and sells at lower but not suspiciously low prices. I'm going to see what they offer. If not acceptable, then a new drive it is. An maybe Raid 5. Smile
