Not joking at all. I knew of some cases where people at school would miss some time. Didn't realize it could stop you from playing pro FB. Just thought they would give him some kind of meds and be on his merry way.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold will be sidelined indefinitely after being diagnosed with mononucleosis, coach Adam Gase announced Thursday. Trevor Siemian will start Monday night against the Cleveland Browns.
The Jets, who lost starting wide receiver Quincy Enunwa to a season-ending neck injury this week, could be without Darnold for multiple weeks.
"Looks like it," Gase said. "Good thing we've got an early bye week."
The bye week falls in Week 4, following an away game against the New England Patriots. Darnold's earliest likely return is Week 5 at the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kinda depends on when you get it (easier if you’re younger) and just individual variability.
My daughter got it as a mid-to late teen, and as I recall, she spent a couple weeks or more just sprawled in our recliner moaning.

Sorry to hear that.

The disease can affect the liver and spleen, the risk of rupturing the spleen would keep any athlete out of participating in contact sports.

Takes a long time to recover, even if you are young. Weeks of fatigue.

It was tough enough at 19 while at UCLA, I can't imagine it at 22 in the NFL and being competitive. I dropped one class, the Econ prof was kind enough to give me a "B" without showing up, so I only attended two classes that quarter, and didn't have to worry about getting hit by all-pro defensive ends and linebackers. Your arms and legs feel like they have wrist and ankle weights on 'em, and your torso has a weighted vest at all times.
I'm assuming they could probably dope up a NFL QB, so that he'd think he feels better..... to start with.... but when his whole body still works in slow motion, and his every pass attempt falls short, and then when he *does* get hit by the aforementioned all-pro defensive ends and linebackers, he's gonna wish he hadn't tried to play. As would the rest of the team and their fans. That's without regard to other potential susceptible injuries brought on by the disease. Mono and contact sports are not a good idea.

My wife got it shortly after the birth of our second son. It was hell to have it with a newborn.

Adult mono sufferer / survivor here. I have about 3 months of my life with few memories thanks to the severe fever.
No way you can get full mono and play any kind of professional sport.
