Different spin on the wearing of masks.

- the various respirator masks sold at hardware stores; like:

Every type of consumer mask has been OOS for weeks at HD and everywhere else. Sad
"... many might have..."

I'd bet many on this forum already own some of these items (which prompted my question.)

Since we know that a basic cloth mask or scarf doesn’t do much to keep you from getting infected, do you think maybe we are being encouraged to wear masks to help keep asymptomatic people from spreading the C19 virus?

That's my take on it.

We realized that last night also. But before we get around to that, I'm using a cut up t-shirt and a binder clip.

I have one of these and find it way more comfortable to wear than the alternatives. Would love to wear it out and about, but I wonder how much it would freak others out.

FWIW, a hepa filter is more effective than an N95, but probably harder to breathe through. And you'd have to shape it into a mask that wraps around your nose, because if air is leaking around the edges of the mask, it's much less useful. That's one reason a bandana is useful, because it can be adjusted to leak less.

People who cough but are asymptomatic are surely who you’d like to see covering up with something. Logically, everyone should wear something.

Masks & filters remind you to not touch your mouth and nose.

That’s exactly right. Specifically, experts have come to believe that the virus may spread through the dispersement of exhaled aerosol particles by asymptomatic infected persons, whereas before it was believed the virus could only spread through droplet particles. Aerosol particles are much smaller than droplet particles and can disperse much farther from the body via sneezing, singing and even speaking normally. Experts now believe wearing a mask blocks may help to block the dispersement of droplet AND aerosol particles.

EDIT: Edited to increase accuracy.

I saw a guy at the grocery tonight wearing one of those. I thought it was amusing, but that was probably just me. Thanks for the link!

that makes sense. There is a big cluster here in Western Washington near Mt Vernon where a regional choir was practicing. They were essentially doing everything right, but it is believed one or more were asymptomatic, and the heavy volume of exhalation was causing aerosolized virii to be wafting around the room.
