Article: "New iPad mini is this close to replacing your iPhone"
#1
Interesting idea. Not something I’m drawn to, but it’s still a twist in the tech UI world.

Tuqqer,

Not a chance. I have an iPhone 11 Pro and an iPad Mini 5. They absolutely cannot replace each other. They compliment each other. The iPhone is a phone and camera first. General purpose device for a slew of other tasks that don't require a large screen second, i.e. track blood sugar, manage contacts, pay for goods, read a text message, etc. It isn't nearly as good as an iPad of any kind for anything that requires a larger screen and keyboard. The iPad Mini is the opposite. An iPad Mini becomes more of a iPhone replacement when you own a large phone such as an iPhone 13 Pro Max. 'course, if you're in the market for phone that large and a tablet that small, get the iPhone since it'll likely have superior tech in it.

Being endowed with Big Foot sized mitts and in possession of rapidly aging peepers, this exact notion crossed my mind during the event.

I will not lie, my heart went pitter patter in a good way.

For you.

It still sounds cumbersome since there isn't a dialing app, but I could see the possibility of it being adapted by many of my clients -- a fair number, such as myself, use GV exclusively. Which can get around that limitation.

A lot of them are dual carry, phone + iPad, the iPad is used to show clients documents and photos... but if they could combine them, or use the iPad for work only... hmmmm.

They all use MAX phones, or big Notes -- but even bigger wouldn't phase them.

Its an interesting twist.

jdc,

Nope. If an iPad Mini could replace an iphone for them, they would've done it already. It isn't like the iPad Min is a new item. It's been around long enough for people to use a replacement for the iPhone if they really wanted to do it.

Would do that in a minute for my son, who barely ever uses his iPhone, but always has/is on his (current) iPad mini. We'd just need to get to a point where calls can be made/received on the iPad in any situation. (I need to read the article)

Zoid,

Google voice or any other VOIP-type app. Just make sure the iPad Mini has cellular service. I've done it with my iPad Mini on many an occasion.

And several of them use their iPads in the way I described, but the mini has always been frowned at cause of cost and speed.

jdc,

There's your answer. That tells me if they know they can do it and could if they really wanted to but choose not to do so. I didn't factor cost into the equation because for some, it doesn't matter. If they want something enough, they'll pay for it. The iPad Mini has always had a bad cost/performance ratio. It's a niche product in comparison to other iPads. For me, it's always been worth the bucks because other iPads are too large. The last iPad I had that wasn't a Mini was Apple's so-called "New" iPad back in 2013/2014. Even then, the iPad Mini couldn't replace my iPhone for the same reasons I still have a separate phone and iPad now.
