I'm considering purchasing a Fischer Space Pen
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_pen
I really like it for its compact size and the pressurized ink. I write on a note pad positioned on the steering wheel (while parked!) and "normal" pens become unusable in this position after a couple of seconds.
It's hard for me to lay down $20 on a pen that I haven't been able to hold and test. Does anyone here have experience with a Space Pen? What are your thoughts on it? Is it a bunch of hype and hooey or is it worth the dough?

I had one in elementary school and loved it. It's compact size when the cap is on makes it really slick. Back then (mid 90's) the pen wasn't a whole lot better then your average ball point pen, but at least the ink was consistent.

Yeah, the pen works. Unless they have regular sizes now, I find them to be too small for my hands. Also, the ink runs out kinda fast and isn't all that cheap to replace. The $20 to buy the pen in the long run should be no big deal.
But hey, it fills a need, and if you have that need, with it you will succeed.

Up until last week, I didn't have the need for a Space Pen.
But now that I've put down my deposit with Virgin Galactic, Sir Richard (Branson) sent me a "Welcome To Space" gift pack that includes the Space Pen. It's kinda small but seems to work okay.
Go for it!!!
Okay, I lied about the deposit part....
But my brother had the Space Pen and he thought it was cool and seemed to work well.

Deck is correct, small for my mitts, and ink runs out fast. Last time I bought a refill was the late 1970's, expensive then.

I have several. They tend to get mixed in with the other pens, but when they re-surface, I love using them.
All in all, though, it's still only a pen.

"The first patent on a ballpoint pen was issued on 30 October, 1888, to John J Loud"

NASA was around in 1888. Back then they didn't even have adult diapers.
