Strange odor, but kind of a mystery

A live mouse or similar running across the room, particularly if wet, could maybe cause this.

Hmm... interesting theory, although I have never seen any traces of mice in this house. I would assume we would see some in the basement. I'll set some traps anyway.

As a dynamite odor reducer/eliminator, consider hydrogen peroxide. https://www.amazon.com/Viva-Doria-Hydrog...087481DMN/ The advantage is that not only will it disinfect/deodorize, but it breaks down to harmless products, and isn't likely to damage anything you care about. Just be super-careful when handling. (If the problem is indeed a mouse or something that is running across the room, the H2O2 will kill it dead, and probably also disinfect/destroy the tissues.)

The stuff linked in the original post.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072KFTKJZ

But you are right, I looked up the SDS at Bona.com and it/s below 1%

I'll probably try the product you linked.

It's not expensive, so probably worth a shot. Just be sure to wear chemically-resistant gloves!!! This stuff can easily burn through layers of skin.

How do I apply to the hardwood floors?

How do I apply to the hardwood floors?

First try cleaning a small hidden spot that will never see the light of day, or that you won't care if it did.

I think 12% is too strong to work with, if the spot will ever show.

If not, ok.

But it's more common to use 3% diluted with water, and it would give you more time to work, and be less harmful to tissue.

Even 3%, undiluted could damage wood to some degree.

But if it's normally covered by carpet, then any damage shouldn't matter.

As far as application, you could scrub the floor with a towel soaked in the H2O2, or do something I do with bleach - put a couple layers of paper towel down and carefully pour H2O2 on it and let it sit.

You don't want anymore on the paper towels that will run off on to the floor.

I'd guess you could apply it pretty much the same way you did with the Bona PowerPlus.

If you decide to go with 12%, be really careful.

Just for drill, I'd wear eye protection.

Should a bottle slip and bounce, even a little splash in an eye or two could put a damper on your day.
