"Brokeback Mountain" question
#1
No, I haven't seen it yet, but then I haven't seen anything recent in a while.

My question is, do you think it would have been as popular and well-promoted (and award-nominated) if it had starred two relatively unknown male leads? It seems that much of the press it received early on, had to do with the fact that two "name" actors were taking a risk by playing such roles.

I've heard reviews stating what a wonderful love story it is, and I've heard it called incredibly boring and nothing special. I guess I'm wondering how much the curiosity factor entered into its popularity.

I guess I'll find out for myself when it makes it to dvd, but in the meantime, what do you think?

I think it still would have been the same even with no-name actors. . .mainly due to the Director, Ang Lee.

I just saw it and I enjoyed it. . .that said it has does have that "indie film" feel to which some people might describe as "boring"

FYI

For all the guys that don't wanna see it for the "sex" scene. . .I did not find that scene to be that graphic AT ALL (the "action" is implied and they are not fully nude. . .there is more graphic stuff in soft pron) but most men would probably not feel comfortable with that or the male to male kissing scenes. . .

Forget all the guy kissin' stuff. Just how spectacular are Anne Hathaway's tatas?

I could show you, Mike, but that would take this thread over to the FPR side.

. . .yes. . .she is trying to change her image in a major way. . .

She did that "racy" independent movie. . .that went direct to dvd. . .

Now this. . .oh Ms. Princess Diaries. . .you have come a long way. . .

I think it would have still caught the public imagination, because it's a well-crafted story that's allowed to unfold in a way that Hollywood product seldom is. So long as the two male leads were relatively attractive, I don't think their star power was a huge factor.

As a gay man, though, I found the tent scene completely wrong in tone, like some straight person's imagination of what sex between men would be like. I haven't had a chance to see if Annie Proulx's short story is any more nuanced or realistic.

I can help with that. Happy to do it, too.

I thought of it like when a person has sex for the first time. . .and the fact that it was 1963. . .versus 2006. . .and it takes place in a rather rural area. . .so it appeared "authentic" to me. . .

Plus. . .though it is never said. . .I think Jack has had experience. . .whereas it is clear that Innis (sp?) has not (I'm talkin bout man on man experience)
