I have installed Leopard and updated to 10.5.1 . . . TWICE . . . updated QuickTime and iTunes the same. iTunes will not play any songs in my library. The Sound Preferences do not make any sound when selecting an Alert sound or when modifying the volume. Is this a known problem and is there a solution?
TIA

When I installed Leopard, I had a USB audio I/O box hooked up and for some reason, it defaulted to using that for all audio output. Did you double-check that you're sending sound to the built-in speaker or microphone output?
It could also be the old out-of-spec audio setting problem, in which case you might have to visit the Audio MIDI Setup app (in the Utilities folder) and set it to use your Built In Audio output at 44100.0 Hz, 2 ch. 16 bit.

Thanks for the prompt response. In checking the Audio MIDI Setup, I am set up correctly, although the Audio Output window shows external speakers as grayed out. This is an iMac G4/ with the Harmon Kardon speaker and the iSub. I have double checked the Sound Preferences and they are set properly, but still no sound from the alerts or the volume adjustment.
Thanks again, any other options?

If you have the Console.app running, do you see anything noted in the console.log or system.log when you change sound settings?

the iSub negates the sound. Plug the iSub in and the sound disappears. Bummer . . . off to the HP site . . . fingers crossed . . .

There's a known issue with the iSub working, in fact any USB sound device, with Leopard in any iteration. (td)Check back in the archives for the past week at xlr8yourmac.com, as there was extensive covered about this deal in Mike's pages last week. You'll have to ditch the iSub if you want sound out of the speakers. Here, let me go have look for you...be back in a minute or two.

I just checked back in the archives, and it was previous to the past week's archives that the iSub and USB sound issues were being discussed, and I recall specifically that the ISub is a no can do with Leopard at this time.8-) Sorry for that, but I don't know any other answer at this time. Maybe Apple needs to udpate their USB interface for Leopard in general...there should be info on the Apple discussion boards about the issue also. Wish I had time to go search but I've got bigger fish to try to fry this evening.
