iPod sent back "no problem found" - is it going to work?

A week ago my ipod had all the signs of a dying hard drive - occasionally wouldn't work very quickly became never working. I'd hear clicking when I'd attempt to turn it on. Exact same response when I'd try to plug it into my mac. Couldn't even reformat.

Do you think Apple got it right? If so, what else would explain that set of symptoms?

that is the exact reason i took mine to a store. i was afraid they would send it back unable to dupe the problem.

I was a step away getting a new video ipod instead of a refurbed photo ipod replacement. Unfortunately this was because of an error on my record indicating that i got a replacement in september which never happened. Think this will put me in line for a brand new ipod? I'm trying not to be too greedy but the squeaky wheel gets greased...

I'd wager (not much, but some) that when bought into a store you'd be more likely to get it replaced.

At the store you can quietly pester the Genuis with oddball anecdotes (some of which you've listed above) until he gets bored enough to give you a new one so that he can move on to the next customer.

But a guy at a bench with a stack of them in front of him is just as likely to claim it's OK if he can't quickly find anything amiss. Barring that, you might need to wait until it stops for good.

yup. i explained the symptoms to the genius and he said, that in the interest of time, he was just going to replace mine. unfortunately, he replaced it with an exact duplicate. Oh well...it works.

They probably smacked it hard and freed up the stuck HD. Problem fixed...for now.

I should hope that no professional tech would let someone continue to use a hard drive after performing that procedure.

I had to take mine to a store for replacement. My remote jack was dead, and there is no option in the self-serve pulldown menu for "Remote jack not working" or even "other", so I just selected the first option and explained the problem I the comments section.

The comments must have gone to /dev0 because it came back to me with "no problem found" and the remote jack still in its working like the 108th Congress.

Took it to an Apple store and got a new (refurbed) one right away.
