I'm doing this skit kinda thing tomorrow morning. Part of my role involves speaking with a southern accent. Advice? YouTube how-to videos?

Remember, there are no monosyllabic words in the South, not even the word "a".

1) add as many syllables to words as you can. Examples:
Four(4) = Fa-o-er Dog = Da-ogg God = Ga-odd it's = ee-ets 2) Forget to pronounce the second half of words, while still adhering to rule 1 above. Example: Five(5) = Fa-I...(just let it trail off with a wisp of "ve" at the end, or drop it entirely) 3) Learn the names of at least 3 NASCAR drivers, the teams they drive for, and what their daddy's name was. 4) Practice telling this joke: "What's the difference between a Yankee and a Damn Yankee? A Yankee visits from up North, spends some money...then goes home. A Damned Yankee don't never leave" "Wh-ottse difrins 'tween a YanKee anda da-amed YanKee? AYanKee visits frmup Na-orth, spinds sum money den goes ome. A Damned YanKee don't na-ever live."

TiA Will you be doing something that reflects positively on people or negatively? There was just a show on last night about how folks think it's okay to say things about Southerners that if they said about any other race/ethnicity/gender/sex orientation would be unacceptable.

Don't overdo it. The thing that makes people trying to fake a southern accent sound wrong is when they lay it on too thick. Just a hint of it and it will be much better. Just speak a little more slowly and don't overdo.
Do not try to sound like Kyra Sedgwick on "The Closer". OMG, does she overdo it. I can't stand to watch that show because of her affected accent. ![]() Whippet, Whippet Good |
